Counselling and support

With all of the methods that I offer below, I am qualified, trained, and insured to offer this.  I would be happy to provide evidence of my training and insurance if required.

In my experience of offering support, the support that people tend to want when grieving the death of a human being, is  different to what people want when grieving the death of an animal being.

As a result, I tend to offer counselling – for the death of a human being, and support for the death of an animal being, as follows.

One to one, face-to-face counselling

This will be in specific locations that I have arrangements with.  I offer sessions lasting one hour.

Telephone counselling

This will be at a time mutually agreed and arranged between the two of us, and I offer 30 minute or 60 minute sessions.  Please note, I am not able to offer telephone counselling without prior arrangement.  For each session, I will ask that you ring me please for each session.

At the time of the session, if I have not heard from you, after 10 minutes I will try to contact you by sending you a text. If there is then no reply, then I ask that we cancel the session and try to make contact over the following days to see what has happened eg. in case you forgot about the session and were not contactable.  In the unlikely event that you try to ring me but cannot get hold of me, please can you also text me after 10 minutes from the session start time.

Please note, if you change your mind about having a session, I would rather you tell me – people have all sorts of reasons for changing their mind about having a counselling session – I’d just like to know that you wish to cancel, I will not ask you why.

Online counselling

This will be at a time mutually agreed and arranged between the two of us, and I offer 30 minute or 60 minute sessions.  Please note, I am not able to offer telephone counselling without prior arrangement.  For each session, I will ask that you ring me please for each session.

Please note, if you change your mind about having a session, I would rather you tell me – people have all sorts of reasons for changing their mind about having a counselling session – I’d just like to know that you wish to cancel, I will not ask you why.

Email

With email counselling, we take it in turns to send emails to each other, for which I use ProtonMail, which is a free and secure, encrypted email system.  With email, there will a be delay in replying to each other’s email, and so my counselling response is not immediate, but subject to an agreed time frame (agreed between both of us), for when I will email you my reply.

I will ask for at least 48 hours between receiving your email, and my sending you a reply.  I will not include weekends (Saturday or Sunday) within that 48 hours.  If you have not heard back from me after 48 hours of sending me your email, please send me a text in case there have been any problems, technical or otherwise which have prevented me from recieving  your email, or you receiving mine.

I offer one hour or half an hour email counselling as follows:

For one hour: I will use one hour to review your email and to respond to you.  Please can I ask that you also limit your email length to writing your email to one hour * please see note below

For half an hour: I will use half an hour to review your email and to respond to you.  Please can I ask that you also limit your email length to writing your email to half an hour * please see note below

Please note:
* The length of emails both from client and counsellor is variable due to many factors such as typing speed of each person, and how difficult or easy we find it to write about what we want to say.  If this was not limited in some way, we could both end up writing or being sent very long emails, which might take us hours to read.

I find it fairest to limit this by specifying a time limit on the time that you or I spend typing each email and sending it to each other, and by limiting this to either the half hour or the hour.

If I am getting towards the end of the half or full hour (as agreed beforehand), and haven’t covered all of the content of your email, I will bring my email to a close, and state that I haven’t had time to respond to all of what you have said.

Instant messaging (typing online into a 'chat' window)

I also offer online counselling using the free secure online platform VSee,  This is like facebook messenger, whatsapp or other such platforms, in which we agree to ‘meet’ online at a specified time, and take it in turns to type our responses into the chat window.  Unlike face to face counselling, we cannot see each other, however, we are both present at the same time, and so can see and respond to each other’s text replies as soon as they are typed in and the ‘return’ key is pressed.

To save any confusion, at the beginning of each session, I will always start the session. I will also arrange with you beforehand an alternative method of contact to use, such as by phone, should we get disconnected from our session,.  Please see notes below about using VSee.

Video

As with Instant Messaging, I also use VSee for video counselling.  This is a mix between face to face counselling, and instant messaging, as it enables us to see each other, face to face, but using the internet rather than being physically in the same room.  To save any confusion, at the beginning of each session, I will always start the session. I will also arrange with you beforehand an alternative method of contact to use, such as by phone, should we get disconnected from our session, such as by phone.  Please see notes below about using VSee.

Use of VSee - instant messaging or video

Once we have agreed to engage in counselling using video or online instant messaging, you will need to install VSee before our first session, and add me as a contact: pbsupport@protonmail.com

If you are going to use a desktop computer to use VSee, you will need to have a webcam working on the computer.  Otherwise, you can install it on a smart mobile phone and use the photo/video feature of the phone.  Once you have installed VSee, please email me using my ProtonMail id, pbsupport@pm.me, before our appointment to give me your VSee contact details. You can also invite me within VSEE – pbsupport@protonmail.com
